Iris pseudacorus

Iris pseudacorus, or Yellow Flag Iris, is a strong water iris that grows around the borders of big, sunny ponds. It has enormous clusters of green foliage that produce exquisite yellow blooms in late April. The images provided here are just for illustrative purposes. The price given is for one rhizome.

The specific plant in question hails from Scotland. It was collected in wet and marshy areas of Ayrshire, and afterwards it was cultivated in our garden.

Iris pseudacorus is perfect for wildlife gardens and looks especially nice when planted in naturalised drifts with other moisture-loving plants. It also goes well with plants that have dark blue flowers. If you don’t have enough space for a pond or bog garden, consider growing it in a large water-filled container. To keep it under control, divide the rhizomes every three to five years. Irises are poisonous to pets, although the toxicity is considered low and non-life threatening. Consult a veterinarian if your pet swallows a substantial amount of leaf or rhizome.

This blooming herbaceous perennial plant may grow up to 150 cm tall, and its upright leaves can be up to 90 cm long and 3 cm wide. The blooms have the usual iris shape and are a brilliant yellow colour. Their diameter ranges from 7 to 10 cm. The fruit is a dry capsule that can range in length from 4 to 7 cm and contains a number of seeds that are a light brown colour.

Iris pseudacorus thrives in extremely moist environments and may be seen growing in abundance in marshes, where the soil is acidic, the pH is low, and there is a lack of oxygen. The plant may swiftly spread, either by rhizome or by seeds that are carried by water. It serves a function comparable to that of Typha and is frequently seen growing alongside it, but typically in water at a lesser depth. Despite the fact that it is typically an aquatic or marginal plant, the rhizomes have the ability to withstand extended periods of dry circumstances.

We send all marginal water plants bare root, which means we remove the soil before packing the plants. During the summer, we may need to clip back part of the leaves for delivery. The plants are delivered with extreme caution. We can combine postage to pay expenses in most cases if you purchase some other items as well. If you have any queries, please contact us before making your order. Please carefully check our Delivery Conditions before you place an order.
